Technology Empowerment

Posted By: Shree Lilai Digital Date: 30/08/21

Think about two different classrooms of different decades. Imagine the ones in the 1940s and the ones in present, i.e. 2021. Despite being 81 years apart, we have a lot of common elements which only changed a little over time. The blackboard turned green, and chalks were replaced by markers but the resources, methods, and disciplines taught in 2021 are the same ones that were taught in 1940, which is a highly disturbing fact.

The world that we live in changes with every single year passing by. We are living in a totally different setup than the one we were living in a decade ago. Therefore, the change that must have come across in 81 years is unimaginable! And to cope up with the world our education system must also move at a much faster pace than it already is.

From carts to bullet trains and pagers to smartphones, the human race has witnessed great progress in all aspects and fronts of life then why do we lag in education? The traditional method of teaching which includes textbooks and teachers is getting outdated and has been proven inefficient. Moving forward into the 20th century we have seen various technological improvements and it’s time that technology changed the educational sector.

Right now, as the world scenario demands, we should be transitioning to laptops and tablets in class rather than the old books and copies. Embracing technology as a part f our regular academic curriculum is a practice we should have started long ago.

Our current system is missing a lot of current age essential subjects that must be included in a child’s day-to-day curriculum like programming, electronics, artificial intelligence, physical computing, and robotics. These subjects are of immense importance for an individual’s survival in the 21st century! Students need these skills to be competent and stand out in the crowd of millions competing to sustain themselves. And the earlier one learns these skills, the better.

Currently, our education system works the same way it did when our grandparents graduated- with primary emphasis on theory and practical are treated as subsidiaries. Where the opposite should have been happening all along. Disciplines that are included in STEAM, that is science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths, are purely practical subjects. The main focus with these must be on giving that much-needed practical and real-world experience to students. Not just the curriculum and practices, but we need to upgrade our teaching environment as well.

The inclusion of gadgets and technology in the classroom is vital, and cannot be debated. For students to be interested in and learn technology the first, they need to do is to learn to use it. This is what makes gadgets a primary requirement in classrooms while teaching subjects like programming, AI, and robotics.

But this is not the reason why technology must be allowed and in fact cherished in a classroom.

  • Students fancy it.
Students are the easiest to teach when they are curious about new things. Outside classrooms, they can be found engaging constantly with technology but often not for things that have much relation to education. outside classrooms students learn to use gadgets but they are incapable of making good use of the resources that those gadgets hold. The power of technology remains unknown to them. If the kids are taught the scope and use of technology around them, they will definitely learn the right thing in the right manner. This will also result in an interactive classroom, thus making learning through technology a part of their lifestyle.
  • New teachers demand new reforms.
Not only the kids, but even the new-age teachers stepping into the education industry are starting to get frustrated with the same old system. They demand reform. The technology movement has been implemented in all the other professional jobs then why not teaching? For budding and new teachers, technology is considered a necessity for providing a learning environment that matches the current world.
  • Kids are naturally adapting to technology.
Ever tried to teach your grandma how to use a tablet? A Hercules task, it is. Then how come your cousin who just entered primary school knows how to get by the device without being taught? Well, kids have a thing for technology. Call it evolution or mutation but every coming generation knows technology a little bit better than the previous one. Now, technology has become the easiest way the kids can learn, because it is an integral part of their life. Interacting with gadgets in the classroom will not only help them learn better but will also help them gain multi-tasking skills. These skills are important because our students would be left behind in the real world without them.
  • Students can have a choice of pace.
Every student has his or her own pace of learning. We know from years of experience, but many-a-times the conventional classroom makes it difficult to do so. One teacher on 60 children going by a self-determined pace makes it difficult for slow and even fast learners to cope up and stay motivated. With technology, children can revisit lessons and concepts, and fast learners with a more advanced speed can go ahead.
  • Technology is limitless.
Why is programming so important to learn? Why is technology a must in a classroom? Well, because learning should know no boundaries. When students have access to information beyond the pages of their prescribed textbook it gives them exposure to many different ways in which they can learn a concept. Of course, our teachers work hard to come up with creative ideas to teach the kids but this becomes easy with technology. Technology has changed the way we saw learning. It has become more hands-on with an emphasis on a practical approach to solving problems.
  • Future scope for students
When technology is effectively integrated with the daily curriculum of a student, the student is empowered by the knowledge that runs the current world. 70% of the jobs that exist today will not be in existence in the coming 10 years. Therefore, teaching students the right thing at the right time in the right way is very important.
  • The pandemic factor
With the COVID-19 pandemic changing everything around us, education was one of the worst-hit elements. All the educational institutes had to suddenly go online with all the lectures and teaching and the lack of knowledge of technology in the institutes was at the show. In such situations, we realize how important a role technology plays in our lives. If only the students were taught in an environment integrated with technology it would have been.

We really need technology to be included in a regular student’s curriculum and from a young age to ensure that the students get the education they deserve. In this pandemic, this factor has specifically shown out and this gives us a chance to engage our kids in learning technology.

Although many people still tend to rely on the traditional methods of education, immense possibilities await for the students when technology becomes a part of their regular academics. Schools in our country do not seem to be making this change. It is the same classroom of 1940. So, we must search for other ways to give power to our children. Attending an institute that educates kids in technology and science will be an investment of a lifetime.

It comes with so much more than just programming and robotics. Logical reasoning, critical thinking, sharp mind, better problem-solving ability, effective communication are just a few of the many soft skills that the students will learn automatically by learning to code and design applications and devices.

Technology helps a person to be more productive, regardless of their age. It allows students to access the abode of information locked in a void to satisfy their hunger for learning. Lastly, we need all our students to engage in and learn different aspects of the latest technology because they are our future. They are the ones who will be making the future and it is our duty to empower them with whatever skills can lead them to the next level of evolution.

In Cyborg Robotics Academy we ensure that the upcoming generation has strong STEM Skills both to fill workforce needs and to solve the complex problems of our times.

This Raksha Bandhan, move over to learn about the technology world at Cyborg Academy! Try to utilize this pandemic festive season to learn and gain more knowledge about science.

Cyborg combines fun with the opportunity for kids and teens to build and engineer robots while learning AI, visual coding, and machine learning. Programs typically incorporate competitive challenges where kids and teens task their robots with specific actions.
